Better FAFSA, Better Future

Updates

Important Changes

The document below is our favorite, most simplified resource we’ve found that summarizes major changes. Below, we also offer some additional information.

  1. Contributors: Each person/role on the FAFSA will only be able to see questions related to their role. When a student logs in, they will only be able to see questions that should be answered by the student. The parent or spouse will need to log in to see the questions related to their role. Once the appropriate people have completed the questions for their role, the FAFSA will be able to be submitted.

  2. FSA ID: EVERYONE who wants to fill out the FAFSA online will need an FSA ID to access the form. Parent(s) without a SSN will be able to (and required) to create an FSA ID. Each individual's role on the FAFSA will determine the questions they can see. For example, parents or spouses will only see questions related to their roles. Regardless of whether they file a US tax return, all students, parents, and spouses will be required to grant the IRS permission to directly transfer any relevant data into the FAFSA form. It is recommended to make the FSA ID now, before the release of the FAFSA to avoid any delays.

  3. Whose information do students include on the new FAFSA? Thanks to our friends at uAspire or sharing this graphic in a recent webinar.
